Rhinoplasty Q & A
What are the goals of rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty procedure changes the appearance of your nose. Rhinoplasty can help you:
- Increase or reduce the size of your nose
- Narrow the space between your nostrils
- Change the angle between the nose and upper lip
- Change the shape of the tip or bridge of your nose
- Repair a nose affected by injury or birth defect
- Correct some breathing problems
Talk to Dr. DiGeronimo about your areas of concern, and he can create a surgical plan to solve them.
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Dr. DiGeronimo wants you to understand completely how a nose job can enhance your appearance while having realistic expectations. He evaluates your nose structure, facial structure, and cosmetic goals to determine if the surgery is right for you.
You should be in general good health before undergoing surgery. It’s also important you quit smoking.
Girls should wait until around age 14-15 and boys should wait until they are a bit older before having a rhinoplasty. Dr. DiGeronimo wants to make sure the majority of growth has occurred.
What happens during a rhinoplasty?
General anesthesia is usually administered for a nose job, but in some cases, local anesthesia is used.
During the surgery, Dr. DiGeronimo makes incisions within your nostrils and sometimes across the base of your nose. He then reshapes the inner bone and cartilage to create the nose that matches your functional and cosmetic goals.
How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day. Post surgery swelling and bruising is common and most evident during the first three days.
These side effects may last for up to two weeks. Some patients benefit from wearing a nasal splint for the first week after surgery.
Strenuous activity is off limits for 3-6 weeks following rhinoplasty, and you can resume social activity after about 3-4 weeks. It can take up to six months to see the final results of your surgery.
