New Year's Resolution: Uncover a Younger Version of Yourself with a Face-lift
Like most aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures, face-lifts have come a long way in the last few decades. Surgical tools and techniques have been modernized so that incisions are more subtle and some patients can even go home on the same day of the procedure to recover in the comfort of their own home. A face-lift procedure is typically performed in middle age (late 30s and 40s), when the skin begins to show signs of aging due to collagen loss and less elasticity.
Everyone ages at a different pace and experiences the signs of aging in different ways, so there is no “right” age to invest in a face-lift and other aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures to help you maintain a fresh, youthful appearance.
Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Ernest DiGeronimo, offers surgical and nonsurgical procedures for both men and women at DiGeronimo MD Advanced Plastic Surgery in Miami, Florida.
What a face-lift can do for you
Also known as a rhytidectomy, a face-lift is a surgical procedure designed to tighten and “pull back” loose, sagging skin and remove excess fat deposits so that your face looks smoother, younger, and firmer than before.
While crow’s-feet and fine lines and wrinkles can be managed with topical treatments like Botox® and dermal fillers, thinner, sagging skin is a telltale sign of aging that can’t be improved with creams or antiaging products.
Why does skin sag with age?
As we age, skin that was once tight, firm, and youthful begins to look thinner, looser, and saggy, especially around the face and neck. This is the result of several factors such as less collagen and elastin production, genetics, and lifestyle factors like poor diet, sun exposure, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, which can further dehydrate the skin and make it look older.
How a face-lift works
When you visit our Miami office for your consultation, Dr. DiGeronimo will perform a comprehensive evaluation and discuss your goals to help you find the procedure and treatment that is best for you.
Dr. DiGeronimo works with precision and expertise to give you a natural looking face-lift that will leave your skin looking more youthful and firm, without obvious signs of plastic surgery.
During the procedure, you’re placed under general anesthesia. Dr. DiGeronimo makes several incisions along the hairline where the skin will be gently pulled back and stitched in place. The recovery period varies from person to person, but the typical recovery period takes several weeks for all of the residual swelling to go down.
A face-lift won’t halt the aging process, but most people can expect the results to last an average of approximately 10 years.
