How Sculptra® Stands Out From Other Fillers

When it comes to rejuvenating skin treatments, injectables are near the top of the list. Dermal fillers can address facial imperfections like wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging or bagging of your facial skin. Neurotoxins can “freeze” wrinkles caused by muscle movements in their tracks. However these injectables have to be repeated frequently to maintain results.
At DiGeronimo MD Advanced Plastic Surgery in Doral, Florida, Dr. Ernest M. DiGeronimo offers a full range of cosmetic procedures including dermal fillers — and Sculptra®, a different kind of injectable that encourages your body to produce more of the building blocks that support your skin from the inside out.
How injectables work
Most injectables are made up of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is naturally produced by your body. These fillers focus on plumping out static wrinkles in areas where your face has started to show signs of aging. However, the HA is slowly absorbed by your body, meaning injections have to be done again.
Another class of injectables is made up of neurotoxins, like Botox®. These are effective on dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions, like crow’s-feet around the eyes and smile lines around the mouth. Of course, these also wear off after several months and must be reapplied.
How Sculptra stands out
Instead of being an HA filler or a Botox-like wrinkle eraser, Sculptra is in a class of its own. Sculptra is the “first and original FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA) facial injectable” and was designed to address the midsection of the face.
Instead of freezing muscles that cause wrinkles or filling in lines, Sculptra stimulates the production of collagen below the surface of the skin. Collagen forms strong matrixes that hold skin up and out and keep your face looking young and glowing.
However, as you age, collagen loss outpaces collagen production, letting your skin fall into wrinkles and folds. This structural change leads to deepening of the nasolabial folds (running from the corners of your nose to the outside corners of your mouth), and causes loss of volume in your cheeks.
Sculptra is injected in a crosshatch pattern to help encourage new collagen production to provide support from beneath the surface of your skin. The result is a slow, natural filling in of your face in the treated areas. Results can last up to two or even three years — much longer than other injectables.
