Botox basics

Botox is a modified, safe form of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. First used by eye surgeons to paralyze tiny facial muscles to treat lazy eye (strabismus), Botox Cosmetic was eventually approved by the FDA for the treatment of dynamic facial wrinkles. 

Dynamic wrinkles are ones caused by repeated creasing of the skin due to facial expressions, like smiling, frowning, squinting, or sipping through a straw. These are mostly found around the eyes (crow’s-feet), between the brows (vertical worry lines), around the mouth (laugh lines), and around the lips.

These same types of wrinkles can even be found around the jowls, where they combine with static wrinkles caused by loss of collagen and elastin to leave sagging skin. Botox paralyzes the tiny muscles that cause deep creases and wrinkles, allowing your face to look smoother.
