Bothered by Acne Scars? Rejuvapen® Can Help
Acne can leave its mark on your face, from discolored spots to sharp “ice pick” dimples that never seem to smooth out. Fortunately, modern cosmetic dermatology has an answer for unsightly acne scarring.
At DiGeronimo MD Advanced Plastic Surgery in Miami, Florida, Dr. Ernest M. DiGeronimo can use the Rejuvapen® microneedling system to kickstart your body’s natural healing ability and refresh the skin of your face to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
Causes of acne scarring
Around 40% of people with acne end up with scarring. Acne scars are caused by lesions on the skin, which start with a pore that is clogged by excessive sebum. As the oil produced by your skin builds up behind the clog, a pimple forms, then bursts the cell’s walls.
Depending on the size of the pimple, the damage, and whether or not the lesion is infected, a scar can form. This might just be a shiny or reddish patch, or it could be a dimpled spot. Lots of scars can give your face a mottled or bumpy appearance
Treating acne scars
Facials, microdermabrasion, and light therapy can all be used to treat acne scarring, but for cases with lots of skin irregularity and dimpling, microneedling can deliver the best effects.
The Rejuvapen
In our office, Dr. DiGeronimo uses a handheld device called the Rejuvapen to conduct microneedling sessions. This is a safe, FDA-approved device with nine tiny, sterile, stainless steel needles that pop in and out of the barrel at a fast speed.
The needles are very fine, so when they penetrate the outer layers of skin, all you’ll feel is a light buzz or maybe a hot, prickling sensation. If you are sensitive to the treatment, Dr. DiGeronimo may direct a light topical to be used on the skin surface to numb it first.
The Rejuvapen treatment
As the microneedles go in and out of the skin layers, they make what we call micro injuries: too small to show or draw any blood to the surface, but deep enough that the body recognizes them as tiny wounds and rushes into action.
In reaction to the “injuries,” collagen production increases. Collagen is what acts as the scaffolding that holds up your skin cells, so extra collagen can fill in little dimples and depressions and improve the smoothness and vitality of your skin.
Rejuvapen results
Microneedling adds extra flexibility and suppleness to your skin, and can also address pigmentation issues, helping the skin tone on and around scars become more even for a refreshed and natural look.
Most people schedule several microneedling treatments a few weeks apart to achieve maximum results. Dr. DiGeronimo will consult with you about the extent of your scarring and create a customized plan for you.
