  • Rhinoplasty
  • Definition

Rhinoplasty (disambiguation) is a plastic surgery procedure for correcting and reconstructing the form, restoring the functions, and aesthetically enhancing the nose, by resolving nasal trauma (blunt, penetrating, blast), congenital defect, respiratory impediment, and a failed primary rhinoplasty.

    • Explanation:

Rhinoplasty is done to refine or change the shape of the nose. This is usually performed under general anesthesia. The nose shape, especially the hump or bone and the bulbous tip can be reduced. Nostril width or size can also be improved to create an asymmetrical appearance. Along with this procedure nasal breathing can improve also by fixing the airway. Dr.DiGeronimo likes a natural looking nose, feminine for females and masculine for men. The tip of the nose can be reshaped under local anesthesia whereas the bridge of the nose made of bone has to be adjusted using general anesthesia.

      Ideal Candidates

Rhinoplasty is a delicate, highly individualized procedure that can provide a dramatic imporvement. It is best for those who want to build upon their natural beauty and enhance their looks versus seeking perfection. Ideal rhinoplasty candidates:

      • Are unhappy with the size and/or shape of their nose
      • Have completed facial growth (girls are usually aournd 14 or 15 years old, a bit later for boys)
      • Do not smoke
      • Are physically healthy
      • Have realistic goals and expectations

The Surgery: "Closed" And "Open" Rhinoplasty

The two rhinoplasty techniques are: “closed” and “open.” Dr. DiGeronimo prefers the closed rhinoplasty method, because the incision is not visible after surgery; the incision is made on the inside of the nose. Open rhinoplasty, on the other hand, entails a small incision made on the outside of the nose, between the nostrils, and in some cases on the inside of the nose as well. Dr. Hochstein will discuss which method will provide you with the best results during the consultation.

Upon completion, a splint will be applied to the patient’s nose in order to help support and maintain its new shape. Depending on the particular rhinoplasty procedure, nasal packs or soft plastic splints may be placed in your nostrils; this is done to stabilize the septum (the dividing wall between the air passages).

Rhinoplasty is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia, and lasts about 1 to 2 hours (unless the procedure is a complicated case). Whether Dr. DiGeronimo performs the procedure via the closed or open technique, the surgery for both is very similar in that the framework of bone and cartilage will be sculpted and reshaped.

      Potential Risks and Complications

As with every procedure there are risk for complications. With the rhinoplasty procedure the complications include infections, nosebleeeds, and a reaction to the anesthesia. Scarring is minimal to non-existent, depending on the technique used. ("closed" or "open") Although such cases are unpredictable, there might be need for corrective surgery to be preformed.

      Recovery

During the first 24hrs post surgery your face will feel puffy, your nose may hurt and you may have a slight headache. It is common for small burst blood vessels to appear as tiny red spots on the surface of your skin. These are usually minor spots but may be permanent. If dealing with any discomfort the doctor will be able to precribe you medicane to relieve the pain. As a patient of this procedure one should be ready to be prepared to be bed written for a certain amount of time, except for bathroom breaks.

It is common for a little bleeding to occur during the first few days proceding the surgery. Any nasal packaging will be removed after a few days to provide more comfort. About one to two weeks, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed.

It is preferred that you sleep with your head elevated during the first week of recovery in order to help minimize swelling. The swelling should eliminate in about 2 weeks, although, subtle swelling typically remains for several months.

      Results

The nose is a constant changing facial feature and you will be noticing small changes developing between the first 3 months to 2 years. Although the final outcome ultimately depends on factors such as, age, skin, and ability to heal. In general, the procedure of rhinoplasty is a slow process and end result may not be what it looked like a year prior. However, your nose will change day by day and the idea of what the end result will be will lift your spirits and within a week or so you will appear as though you have never undergone surgery.
